Photogravure Workshops
The polymer photogravure printing process can create artwork with the same beauty and quality of copperplate photogravures using totally nontoxic materials.
This workshop will cover the use of digital positives made on your own computer, film positives created from your favorite photo using a copy machine, and continuous tone film positives created in the darkroom. It will also cover the use of an aquatint screen exposure to achieve photogravure quality. Solar exposure allows this printmaking process to be inexpensive and the workshop will demo the use of a simple contact frame and lightbox exposure unit for those days when the sun is not available. The polymer plates are developed in water and after being printed are cleaned with vegetable oil adding to the process inherent nontoxic, safe benefits.
For those photographers who have never printed before the workshop will cover printmaking techniques: inking, wiping, paper registration, types of paper, etc. At the conclusion of the workshop the students will have a clear understanding of the polymer process and will have prints to take home. Tuition includes materials to make 2 - 5X7 plates plus 1 sheet (22X30) of paper. Additional material may be purchased at the workshop for an additional fee. Class size is limited.
Deborah Riley, instructor, has studied the polymer photogravure process with Dan Weldon, its innovator, at San Raparta International School of Art, Florence, Italy and in his studio at Sag Harbor, New York. Deborah has spent several years working with the polymer photogravure process and has gained a masterly knowledge she is willing to share with others. Deborahs work has been exhibited in one person and group shows across the United States and he work is included in numerous private collections.
